The working group “Reinforcement of Ceramic Materials” is a joint working group of the German Materials Society (DGM), the German Ceramic Society (DKG) and is supported by the Ceramic Composites Network of Composites United e. V. (CU) as well as by the University of Augsburg. The meeting of the working group on March 4, 2022 was held for the first time as a hybrid format, with the Institute of Materials Resource Management (MRM) at the University of Augsburg hosting the presence part.

After welcoming the more than 90 participants by Prof. Dr. Dietmar Koch, Chair of Materials Engineering at the MRM of the University of Augsburg and head of the working group, Antoine Viard presented the activities for the production of SiC fibers on an industrial scale at BJS Ceramics GmbH. Katrin Schönfeld then gave a presentation on the work of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS in the field of CVD fiber coating for SiC/SiC composites. IKTS has extensive static CVD coating capabilities and conducts screenings on the behavior of various coating systems. Johanna Schmidt spoke about SiC/SiC materials for aircraft turbines and related development progress at Schunk.

A fiber injection process for oxide ceramic fiber composites and its automation was presented by Jonas Winkelbauer from the University of Bayreuth. The aim of the work is to develop a fully automated oxide ceramic short fiber injection process with intuitive robot programming. Tobias Lehnert reported on investigations into the manufacturing chain of C/C-SiC using machine learning approaches at the DLR Institute of Structures and Design in Stuttgart. The final presentation was by Tobias Schneider of MRM/Augsburg on an ongoing project on life cycle assessment of the production of ceramic fiber composites. The focus is on a comprehensive CMC life cycle analysis, which above all also includes the very energy- and resource-intensive ceramization step of CFRP (in LSI, PIP, CVI).

As usual, you will find a detailed summary and the approved documents of the speakers in Carbon Connected.

The next meeting of the working group will take place on October 14, 2022, we will inform you about the agenda and the venue in time.

Prof. Dietmar Koch and Dr. Samet Kurt from the MRM then gave the guests a guided tour of the MRM building at Augsburg University, which will be completed in 2020, and the laboratories of the Chair of Materials Engineering.
