On September 9, 2021, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. mult. Klaus Friedrich was posthumously awarded the Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials during an honorary session dedicated to him at the “30 Years of Leibniz-Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe GmbH (IVW)” celebratory colloquium. The medal was presented to Professor Friedrich’s wife Elke Friedrich by Dr. Karl Steiner, Vice President for Research and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

Professor Friedrich passed away on May 29, 2021. For many years, he had led and shaped the IVW like no other.

The Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials has been awarded since 1984 and recognizes pioneers and innovators in composite materials who have made significant contributions to the composites field through leadership, scholarly and education endeavors, inventions and/or economic enterprises over a sustained period of years.
