Hanover. Around 40 national and international speakers, 14 hours of program, five top-class keynotes and four industry-oriented focus topics on two days – the LightCon conference program on June 1 and 2 offers a concentrated load of information and presentations around the lightweight construction industry. The motto of the conference is “Lightweight Design on the Path to Circular Economy” and focuses on the global challenges of resource efficiency and climate protection for a sustainable circular economy and the reduction of CO2 emissions. The conference language is English.
High-ranking politicians open LightCon conference
Right at the start of the conference, the focus is on politics. The presence of high-ranking politicians at LightCon and the assumption of patronage by Dr. Robert Habeck, Germany’s Minister of Economics and Climate Protection, underscore the great importance of lightweight construction technology for the development of Germany as an industrial location. Opening speakers include Stephan Weil, Minister President of the State of Lower Saxony, and Michael Kellner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.
All the issues affecting the lightweight construction sector
The two days of the conference will cover all the main topics currently affecting the lightweight construction sector. The topics will include new material solutions, innovative manufacturing technologies, sustainable lightweight engineering and design, and solutions and use cases from the user’s perspective. The four topics will be played out with different content on both days of the event. The individual presentations will last twenty minutes each.
New material solutions
The presentations on new material solutions and their possible uses describe, among other things, cost- and resource-efficient production of organosandwich panels, recycling of carbon fibers, and evaluation of primary and secondary materials made of magnesium metal. The second day of the congress will feature new steels for additive manufacturing, multifunctional sandwich solutions for EV battery systems, and a self-healing material solution on the road to a circular economy.
Innovative manufacturing technologies
Presentations in the “innovative manufacturing technologies” session will explain, among other things, the processing of thermoplastic composites and the future of lightweight metal parts. On June 2, the focus will be on how hybrid joining of metal composite structures is boosting the lightweight and circular economy. Other presentation topics include 3D printing of high-strength aluminum and 3D printing in medicine.
Sustainable lightweight engineering and design
The session around sustainable lightweight engineering and design will cover topics including the technical maturity of innovations in manufacturing and a computational approach to sustainable manufacturing of lightweight structures. Other topics include additively manufactured lightweight components in automotive engineering, integrative lightweight structures in civil engineering, and the further development of ultralight components in high-volume production.
Solutions and use cases from the user’s perspective
The following solutions and use cases will be presented as part of LightCon’s fourth focus topic: thermoplastic composites for battery housings, carbon reinforced concrete in the construction sector, additive fusion technology with carbon fiber reinforced plastic, mobile and lightweight hydrogen storage for large volumes, and data-driven technologies in the production system.
Keynotes from market-leading companies
Highlights of the LightCon conference program include keynotes from market-leading companies: Airbus informs about materials as a key role for lightweight construction in aviation, Bosch Climate Solutions talks about the importance of the cross-sectional function of lightweight technology, IBM lectures about sustainability goals and digital transformation, Volkswagen informs about the advantages of lightweight construction in e-vehicles and Affan Innovative Structures presents the museum of the future in Dubai.
One ticket – two events
The LightCon ticket also entitles the holder to visit HANNOVER MESSE, which is taking place at the same time on 1 and 2 June.
About LightCon
LightCon is an annual international congress trade show that presents lightweight construction solutions for a wide range of user industries across materials and technologies, and was co-founded by Composites United e.V.. The inaugural event will be held on June 1 and 2, 2022, as a stand-alone event parallel to HANNOVER MESSE in Hall 19. In the exhibition area, lightweight construction suppliers will showcase solutions from the entire value chain. The LightCon conference is themed “Lightweight Design on the Path to Circular Economy” and focuses on the global challenges of resource efficiency, sustainability and climate protection, and the reduction of CO2 emissions. The patron of this year’s event is Dr. Robert Habeck, Germany’s Minister of Economics and Climate Change. LightCon’s founding partner is the lightweight construction network Composites United.
