This lightweight carbon version should still have sufficient strength with very high stiffness and very low weight. In addition, it had to fit perfectly into the aerodynamic concept of this sports car to ensure overall performance. Image: ar engineers GmbH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-820642fb gb-headline-text\"><strong>The challenges and solutions in detail<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High quality requirements for the optimisation but also production planning of this component, as the dimensional accuracy must be very good for aerodynamic components that make a\u00a0relevant contribution to the overall performance. This is the decisive prerequisite for achieving the high performance.<\/li>\n<li>The overall structure of the wing including the mount on the chassis must not exceed <span class=\"numbers\">4<\/span>.<span class=\"numbers\">5<\/span>\u00a0kg.<\/li>\n<li>The wing should also achieve a\u00a0high natural frequency (above <span class=\"numbers\">40<\/span>\u00a0Hz) to prevent the structure from fluttering.<\/li>\n<li>This component should be designed as a\u00a0hollow structure made of fibre composite laminate.<\/li>\n<li>The internal structure and the laminate layup for the wing had to be determined.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, it was necessary to withstand high acceleration in the event of a\u00a0frontal crash.<\/li>\n<li>As already mentioned, the weight requirements were very high, so extreme lightweight design was necessary. The best stiffness with sufficient strength and minimum mass had to be found. Therefore, we chose the approach of numerical optimisation.<\/li>\n<li>Despite the lightweight requirements, only a\u00a0limited amount of carbon fibre could be used, as its conductive properties would interfere with radio transmitters \/receivers. This fact had to be taken into account during the optimisation.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, the stacking sequence, number of layers as well as the ply type were parameterised, varying the layer type as well as the number of layers and the fibre orientation and calculated them in various combinations in order to find the optimum laminate design, among several hundreds of solutions. For this we used the Ansys Design Explorer with the help of our own scripts written in Python.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-55f0c910 gb-headline-text\"><strong>Our know-how<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following competences at ar engineers led to the success of this project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High expertise in the conception and realisation of complex projects<\/li>\n<li>Very good understanding of ultra-lightweight design with <span class=\"caps\">CFRP<\/span> \/carbon composites<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the feasibility of the component despite complex laminate layups<\/li>\n<li>Expertise in numerical optimisation with Ansys<\/li>\n<li>Automated result evaluation in order to be able to respond quickly to changing requirements from the customer<\/li>\n<li>Our direct consultation with the customer and their client enabled the project to run smoothly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-7f2b7f8c gb-headline-text\"><strong>Our way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our experience in handling complex projects, coupled with our lightweight design expertise and knowledge of automated numerical optimisation, helped us to meet our client\u2019s requirements in the best possible way, while complying with tight schedules and budgets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Development of a lightweight carbon composite version with very high stiffness at very low weight and sufficient strength. &nbsp; The task German automotive supplier commissioned our CU member ar engineers to develop a rear wing for the performance version of a British roadster.
